This work is about development, knowledge and popular culture that involve the transformations of sheep wool worked in Serra da Mantiqueira. Based on the Actor-Network Theory (ANT), a research was carried out on the transformations in the uses and meanings of fiber from the 1980s onwards. To address these transformations, it was necessary to follow three objectives, the first being an oligoptic vision of sheep wool production in the Serra da Mantiqueira region, to trace its history in the region. The second consisted of identifying the human and non-human actors in the Mantiqueira networks and the third and last one, analyzing the sociotechnical network of sheep wool produced in Serra da Mantiqueira. The research used two networks that work with sheep's wool as an element that represents the cultural identity of their regions: Ave Lã and Mãostiqueiras. In a comparison between the two and briefly telling the history of sheep's wool in the Serra da Mantiqueira region; that more than a geographic connection, there is a cultural connection that permeates the economy of culture between the cities that cross the Sul de Minas and the State of São Paulo. As a methodological process, field research was carried out, interviews with artisans, artisans and sheep breeders and analysis of photographs and images sent by the artisans. The results consist of the cultural importance of sheep's wool for the Serra da Mantiqueira region, both on the cultural side and on the income generation side, both of which face the lack of public policies aimed at valuing local raw material, strengthening local economic development. In addition, still in the field of results, but focused on transformations, the most evident was related to the meaning of a local custom of working with sheep's wool for a "tradition" of the region, with a change of stages of the process in rituals and the second is related to the artifacts themselves, before they were covered, today they are smaller pieces, such as hats, scarves, gloves and decoration pieces.

Controls on the erosion of the continental margin of southeast Brazil from cosmogenic 10Be in river sediments

The Atlantic Ocean coast region of southeast Brazil contains two coast-parallel mountain ranges (the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira) generated by tectonic activity pulses tens of millions years after the main continental rift event occurred around 120 Ma. Although the short-term erosion rates for the region are established, the relative importance of the factors controlling erosion is poorly constrained. We combine new and published catchment-averaged erosion rates (n = 48) using in situ-produced 10Be concentrations in quartz from river sediments to establish the regional erosion pattern. The river catchments are (i) escarpment topography, (ii) high-altitude low-relief and (iii) mixed topography, which record how escarpment fronts are migrating inland. Ocean-facing coastal escarpment catchments of the Serra do Mar (ε = 18–53 m/Ma) can be eroded approximately twice as fast as continent-facing escarpment catchments in the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira (ε = 7–24 m/Ma). The correlation between the normalized channel steepness index (ksn) and slope angle indicates that river incision and hillslope erosion processes combine to maintain the high relief. The Serra do Mar catchments define a mean slope angle threshold indicating that landslides are the dominant erosional process when slope angles in excess of ~30°. Tectonic activity is low and plays no significant role in driving erosion. A first-order relationship between erosion rate and precipitation-temperature across the region implies that climate plays a key role in soil production, river incision and in triggering erosional processes. Although the high topographic relief is a pre-condition for the occurrence of significant erosion, the climatic condition is the outlining factor of the regional variation in erosion rates

To what extent do natural and anthropogenic factors determine the distribution of bats in an atlantic forest in Serra da Mantiqueira, southeastern Brazil?

Bats are the second speciose group of mammals in the Neotropics and are responsible for different ecosystem services, from seed dispersal to pollination, and the control of insect populations. Despite their ecological relevance, several knowledge gaps still exist for this megadiverse group, like which natural factors drive species distribution. Our goal was to determine to what extent natural and/or anthropogenic factors may explain the distribution of bats in one of the largest mountain ranges in South America: the Serra da Mantiqueira, one of the largest remaining of highland Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. We compiled data from 110 bat inventories carried out there along 20 years (1998-2018). Based on the presence/absence of the 56 bats pecies and 46 explanatory variables, we used Favorability Function as a modeling algorithm to predict species richness and distribution. Models were obtained for 38 (86.6% of our compiled species) species based on 10 best variables, being the three most important the spatial component (84.2%, and contributed positively), pasture (34.2%, and contributed negatively) and presence and extension of roads (31.6%, and contributed positively), respectively. As Serra da Mantiqueira contains some of the largest remnants of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, we also analyzed the distribution of bats across the existing protected areas and priority áreas for nature conservation. We found that only 38% of the area with 10 or more species have more tan 70% of their surface protected, while others 62% are either not protected or have< 10% protected. Despite the large protected areas network along the Serra da Mantiqueira, bats are mainly affected by the proportion of pasture in the landscape, mainly located in the lower areas (< 1,000 m a.s.l.). However, 21.9% of the areas with greater favorability are still lacking protection. Ecological corridors, coupled with ecological restoration throughout the region, are extremely necessary.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
